Some losses arrive like a premature endgame,
A sudden silence falling where the rooks and bishops play.
Not because the final sleep is a stranger to our door,
But because the morning ended long before the soaring roar.
Hawi Kaloki was a blossom in the spring,
Too young for final chapters, or a quieted string.
We tally up the ratings, the trophies won and claimed,
As if a human spirit can be tracked, and scored, and named.
The Measure of a Life
A rating cannot capture how a soul would softly glow,
A trophy cannot measure all the seeds he helped to sow.
What aches within the marrow is the future left unspun—
The tournaments unplayed, the uncompleted run,
The younger child who looks across a checkered, silent square,
And whispers, “I am playing because Hawi once sat there.”
“He is wise who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” — Epictetus
Moving Beyond the Board
There is a sacred weight within an unfinished tale,
Yet legacy takes flight when earthly measures fail.
We do not get to dictate how the hourglass will run,
But we decide if meaning stays long after day is done.
His journey travels onward through the hearts he helped ignite,
Through every young Kenyan who steps up to claim their right,
Through family, through community, through every dreaming child
Who learns the board is wider than the squares where pieces filed.
A Fleeting, Beautiful Game
“Passing time is a river, a violent current of events, glimpsed once and already carried past us, and another follows and is gone.”— Marcus Aurelius
So let us not reduce him to a number or a prize,
Or solely to the sorrow hiding in our weeping eyes.
He dreamed. He fought. He ventured. He left a brilliant trace,
And shared a strange, sweet game within this fleeting earthly space.
Rest well, dear Hawi, past the final square,
Your moves live on in every heart that learned to dare. 🕊️♟️
Your story may have ended earlier than it should have,
But perhaps your legacy has only just begun.
